Development: Statues, final

I described in my previous post how pleased I was with the way the statue drawings we going, they have since come on further to the point where I’m happy to use them. I worked a bit more on the edges, muscle detail and colour texture to add an extra level of realism. It’s still well offset by the flat blacks to keep it clearly painted but they have chunkier nature.

I have described before how much I am taken in by Bernini’s sculpture and I went back to study a little more closely. In the “The Rape of Proserpina” hands clasp a leg and the hard marble becomes soft and flesh like. Combine this with the dramatic stances and the sculptures have a great sense of foreboding and drama. This is important for my work as I wanted these to be foreboding and a symbol of the overwhelming power Senna is about to encounter.

It is some of this I have tried to bring into my paintings, and hopefully this will show in not just the close-ups but also the full body versions of each one. All of which are below.
